Penguin 4.0 is here…so what does that mean for you?
Have you ever sat down at your computer and wondered if today was dooms day?
Is today the day that Google will put the hammer down on your site? If you are breaking out in night sweats every time there is an algorithm change, then chances are this post is for you.
I will be the first to admit that I haven’t always done link building and SEO the right way, however, these days I like to walk the straight and narrow.
You wanna know why?…
The straight and narrow will keep you from the dreaded night sweats. Lol
I love marketing, seo, and business related things, and I am testing site movement, keywords, links, ect on a daily basis.
Yes I know, not the most glamorous gig, but I love it.
September 2016 will forever be known as the Google algorithm Penguin 4.0 roll out.
What is Penguin?
Link quality is SUPER duper important here. Yes I know I am going back to the 80’s with words like super-duper, but I gotta do it…lol
Let me give you a quick example:
Let’s say you have a site about purple cats, and your competitor has a site about purple cats too.
Let’s also say that your content is of the same quality as well as your on page optimization, so what separates you…let’s assume that the only thing separating you is the links pointing to your respective sites.
If you have amazing natural linking from authority sites because you have been doing things right, and your competitor has some authority links they paid for, and the rest are links they bought off fiverr, aka spammy low quality links, then YOU my friend will out rank the competition all year long.
How does that sound?
Google will look at spammy or unnatural links and penalize your site, and hold back your precious rankings that you want.
So what can you do? You can monitor your backlink profile more frequently and disavow the links that are spammy, unnatural, or that you think might effect your site in a negative way. I was going to write a post about disavowing links, however, “ain’t nobody got time for that”. lol
I don’t write as much as I should because I am busy serving my local clients, however the disavow topic has several great articles, so take your pick and check out the great articles out there.
So you wanna know:
What Do Penguin 4.0 Updates Mean For My Site?
Penguin in the past updated on a certain date, and webmasters knew the specific date when they saw a dip in their rankings due to their shady link building behavior.
Well now with new and improved Penguin 4.0, it has become part of Google’s core algorithm, and will be updated in real time. If you see your rankings start to take a dip, the first thing you need to do is check your back links.
The Good News About Penguin 4.0
If good ole Penguin is now part of Google’s core algorithm, and it’s updating in real time, that means that if you get a penalty, and you take the right action, you can come out of penalty by the next time Google crawls your site.
I think this is AWESOME news. It means you no longer have to be shamed long-term for making a link building mistake. The penalty will be lifted and you can move on with your life, and do things better moving forward.
We all live and learn right?
You can get the full official Google Team post here: https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2016/09/penguin-is-now-part-of-our-core.html
Based on what I know about the word granular, I take that to mean that penalties will be assessed more on a page level rather than a site level!
I think this too is such an awesome advantage of the new update. This means you can analyze ranking decreases on a page level first if you notice that a particular page has dropped out of site.
The best news is that this is just ONE of the over 200 ranking factors the big G uses to rank sites, so if you just focus on providing value in your niche, and write amazing content for the reader, and not for robots, and promote that awesome content, you will be leaps and bounds ahead of the rest!
Seo As A Strategy
SEO in my opinion should not be the only egg in your basket, and should definitely not be thought of as something that is a quick win.
So for me, how it’s effected my business is, when a potential customer tells me they need rankings on a competitive keyword in a month, I try to reset expectations and let them know search engine optimization is a long-term strategy, and if they are persistent, then I let them know they want a blackhat SEO, they don’t want me. Lol
Using shady tactics to direct link to your money site is not going to continue to work with these real time updates that Penguin 4.0 is bringing.
Kay’s advice on Penguin 4.0
You can’t be Usain Bolt overnight…in case you have been under a rock and don’t know about him, he is the fastest man in the world, and ultimate track star.
You don’t become the world’s greatest overnight and you don’t rank a website overnight either…not unless there is zero competition. Lol I mean you could slap up a YouTube video for the keyword loopy-doo in Dallas, and I am sure that could rank in a matter of hours.
Ok, so I am being a little silly, but you get the point right?
Don’t worry about the new updates; all in all, I think they are great! Happy ranking everyone!!
